Thirty Years of the Daily Grind
Ko Ah Chie, known to everyone simply as Andy, graduated from UKM with a BEcons (Hons) in 1990 and stepped straight into the corporate world.
He began as a Claims Executive with an international insurance company, became an insurance agent, and spent around 15 years there before moving on to manage healthcare across several companies. On paper it was a solid career. In reality, every single day was a continuous, competitive struggle: long working hours, relentless pressure, stress, and burnout. What kept him awake at night was the lack of work-life balance, and the same worry that follows almost every parent, his children’s education and the financial freedom he hadn’t yet found.
The Millionaire Milestone He Missed
He once told his wife that he would be a millionaire before the age of 40, reaching the stage where spending no longer came with worry.
But the years in corporate came and went, and that milestone slipped past him. The desire never died; it kept burning quietly inside. The problem was that he had no solid plan and no clear route to get there. In fact, he admits, he was almost too scared to even dream it. Because as retirement age draws closer, our choices begin to narrow, and the window to start over feels like it is closing.
The Day He Said Yes
Andy never stopped searching for something beyond his corporate work. Unit trusts, property, a few other ventures squeezed into weekends and after-office hours. He tried them all. None of them delivered.
By 2023 he was still looking. His wife’s friend had been inviting her to join Elken almost every month. What finally caught his attention was a social media post about hydrogen water. He dug in and researched it thoroughly, and all that research led him to one decision. On 8 August 2023, he turned to his wife and said yes. She passed that same yes on to Ms Marie Lee. Then she studied the marketing plan, asked Andy to lead from the front, and committed to driving the business right alongside him.
Beating the Breaking Point
Like everyone, Andy hit his slumps. The business got tougher, momentum slowed, and potential customers failed to show up for the appointments they had made. It was frustrating, though never quite enough to make him quit.
So he and his wife did the only thing that works. They met more prospects and widened their network, again and again, until the breaking point gave way.
The Price Behind the Trophy
People see the success: the trophy, the title, the income, the achievement. What they don’t see is the sacrifice behind it all.
- The long hours, and the sales push that began only after the office day was already done
- The weekends given up to long working days while others rested
- The rejections, the unanswered calls, and the WhatsApp messages that were never replied to
That was the real cost of the dream, paid quietly, away from the stage lights.
The Night That Lit a Fire
There was one moment that changed everything. It was Elken Winners Night 2025, on 17 May.
After just one year in the business, Andy had already become a 2-Star Director, and he walked in naively expecting to be recognised that night. He was wrong. That title did not bring him onto the stage. Instead of deflating him, the disappointment lit a fire:
“Andy, you must move up in rank. You have to push your limits to the maximum. Follow the company plan. Get recognised.”
He gave himself exactly one year to do it.
The Architect and the Team Behind Him
Ask Andy who made this possible, and the first name is his wife, Iyen Lee. He calls her the true architect of their success, the one who plans, monitors their progress, and reads the marketing plan like an expert. His success, he insists, simply would not have happened without her, or without his upline.
He is deeply grateful to MCCM Mr and Mrs Seng Kok Meng, who met him many times over coffee so he could draw on their wisdom for motivation and strategy. To MCCM Kak Hasmawati, Chu Hau Ling, and Mr Koo Teck Kee, for their unconditional support and their commitment to helping him and his wife become the best versions of themselves. And to his upline Ms Marie Lee, the best upline he could have asked for, never selfish, and a firm believer that success is never built alone.
His Message to Anyone on the Brink
To everyone still on the journey, Andy has a message born from experience. Never underestimate what can happen when you refuse to quit. If you are discouraged right now, standing on the brink of walking away, you are not alone.
“Your current situation is not your final destination. Keep learning, keep believing, keep doing, keep going. Keep taking the next step even when you can’t see the whole path.”
Things can change faster than you think, he says. The breakthrough you are reaching for may be far closer than you realise.
